It is important that you purchase safe fetch items for your dog. If you dont want to spend the money, you can make good fetch toys, toys such as braided rope items that are too thick or big for the dog to swallow. Individual socks that dont match make wonderful braided ropes, provided that they are tied together into a large enough knot that they can not be swallowed. Another excellent way to make several good throwing toys is to take an old garden hose and cut it into foot long strips. When you are teaching your dog to fetch it is a great training trick to have a whole set of these rubbery "sticks" handy, because you can throw one out and as the dog begins to bring it back to you, you can immediately throw another one...thus he will drop the first one and go after the one that you just threw. This is the first step towards training him to release the object to you.
Is Your Dog Destructive - Do you come home after leaving your dogs home alone during the day to find that they have destroyed something? When your dog is bored, they will play with anything interesting to keep them busy. My German Shepherd mix single handedly destroyed several small trees and bushes in my back yard because he did not have anything else to play with. Instead of blaming the dog, I blamed myself. It is unfair to leave your dog home alone without anything to do and expect them to sit around patiently and wait for you. I solved this problem by giving my three dogs a variety of interactive dog toys to play with. This keeps them busy and out of trouble.
Easy to rip fabric or add-ons: The variety of dog toys on the market today is insane - there are countless balls, Frisbees, and of course the “stuffed” animals. Be careful when selecting a toy that could be passed as a toy for a child. For starters, this could confuse the dog and lead the dog to chew other toys, such as your daughter’s dolls or your son’s action figures. Mainly though these type of toys could lead to suffocation and build up in the dog’s stomach or intestines. The small particles of fabric or stuffing can lodge into the dog’s throat or the dog may swallow the particles. To avoid these potential tragedies, look for toys that withstand heavy chewing or opt to get a toy that is made of material that is organic.
